I usually start off the New Year by making a big pot of soup beans for supper. This year was no different, so I thought it fitting that my first recipe post for 2021, be my soup bean recipe! If you plan to make these, allow a little over 3 hours from start to finish. If you prefer to soak the beans over night, I am sure it would cut down on the cooking time. However, I have never soaked a bean in my life, so I can’t say for sure. lol
What I can say for sure….These are the BEST soup beans ever!

Ingredients:
- 1 pound of dry great northern beans
- 1 large yellow onion, diced
- 6 ounces of ham pieces
- 2 tablespoons bacon grease (or butter)
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/8 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 2 32 ounce cartons chicken broth
Add the bacon grease, ham pieces and onion to a large pot. Saute over medium high heat until the onion is translucent. Meanwhile, rinse your beans and discard any rocks or questionable beans. Add all remaining engredients to the pot, cover and simmer over low heat for about 3 hours, stirring occassionally. After about 3 hours, the liquid should have thicked and the beans should be soft. If not, cook a little longer.
